Yeah SueN, they absolutely suck! It’s the worst part of any DWI I have had. I currently still have one from my 3rd conviction and will get it off after 5 years. Due to covid, my court date didn’t happen until 2 years later, which I had the device on my vehicle the entire time leading up to court. Then I was told I had to have it on through probation, which was another 2 years. Then for good measures, after you have 3, they make you keep it on 1 additional year after probation. Some people with multiple DWI/DUI’s will have it on for life.

Regarding the accuracy, the IID’s are extremely sensitive. I talk in-depth about them here https://dui.zone/interlock-device/. It’s worth a read. They do have false positives so their accuracy isn’t perfect by any means, but the shit part about that is, it is still your responsibility to make sure nothing sets it off…false positive or not. In the eyes of your PO, if it detects something, it will be a violation. If you have someone in the car that wreaks of alcohol, it’s hard for me to see it detecting their breath b/c it comes straight from your lungs, not the air around you, but I would definitely be careful. I always take the safest route and keep anything away from mine to make sure it isn’t set off.
